Guns and Roses

No, I'm not talking about the hard rock band. *sheesh* people, you should know me better by now!

This Guns and Roses . . .

If you like romance, if you like suspense, if you like 'discovering' new authors, if you like getting more bang for your buck, then this is the book for you!

Ten stories for the price of one. Ten awesome authors. And all of them best-selling authors at that!

This is an anthology written by the ladies from Murder She Writes  blog. Buy it. You will discover new authors and enjoy some fun and/or disturbing reads!

Three of these authors are my faves, but I'm sure you will have other faves.

But I will say this:
  • Roxanne St. Clair made me cry. Okay-I cry at Disney movies, but I very rarely cry while reading a book . . . well, okay, I did cry during a couple of the Harry Potter books, and I did cry while reading Ghost Story by Jim Butcher, but that's it . . . really. . . maybe . . . I don't know. But it was a good cry!
  • Karin Tabke is really, really good at characterization. I loved her heroine--Rebel Yell Culpepper. How much more Southern can you get? Heck, just talking about her causes me to slip into my own southern vernacular! Plus she has a minor character named Mags. I'm MAGS! :-) Remember, I've been keeping safe watch over one of Karin's Blood Swords--Thorin. Man, do I love that one-eyed Viking!
  • Toni McGee Causey is seriously funny and writes a totally messed up character in Bobbie Faye! If you haven't read any Bobbie Faye stories, then you need to start now! It's amazing how she can seriously get into messes and yet manage to get out of them! I especially loved this story when Bobbie Faye lectures . . . Well, I won't tell you more, because I don't want to ruin the story.
Well, what are you waiting for?

Buy this now!

*no, I don't make any money from this endorsement, I just liked the book.*
*no, I didn't like all the stories, but I did like enough of them to think it was worth plunking my money down*

Later, Peeps!

Touching Others

I will be the first to admit that I live in my own little world, a vacuum if you will. I do my thang. I do family stuff. I'll post to my goals groups. I'll help friends out if they are in need for a shoulder to cry on, to critique, to gritch about life in general. I belong to the PTA, but I'm not really 'active' unless someone calls for help. I do know the word NO and I know how to use it.

But last week, I had a few surprises. None of them were big surprises, but each one of them touched me.

1) My friend Cyndi sent me 21K on her new story to critique. Now, Cyndi writes contemporary cowboy stories, romances along the lines of Harlequin. I don't read these stories on a regular basis, but I do enjoy Cyndi's stories. Imagine my surprise when I saw my name, MAGS.
Recently, I've been calling myself Mags when I comment on blogs, post to my goals group, or whenever. This isn't unusual since I tend to add an "s" to other peoples names as a term of endearment (Jods, Megs, etc) if it works with their name.
So when I come across this secondary character's name in Cyndi's manuscript, I laughed out loud. Mags in her story is an older woman, secretary to a lawyer who delightfully banters with the hunky cowboy hero. Trust me, this made my day! I sent Cyndi a quick IM and she told me she had forgotten she put my name in there and would take it out if I was upset--Heck, NO! Again, funnly as H3LL!

2) My friend Jody has been around for decades! We met at KJM Stables--at the time she had Quincy and I think I had Princess, but the Abe monster brought us closer together. We lost touch when she moved to Califorinia, but managed to find each other again about five years ago. Jody is an uber-talented struggling artist who has found her groove and is catapulting her horse cartoons into the spotlight. Check her out on Misfit Designs Facebook page or CafePress.

Jody has been in my cheering section from the first time I started to write middle grade novels. In fact, Jody was the one who gave me Kyte's name. It was her Dungeons & Dragon's persona, so she connected with Kyte on the visceral level. She was one of the first people to read GNOME and her words of praise helped me realize that this was the writing path I needed to travel. Fast forward--we were emailing each other last week or the week before and she sent a note along the lines of  "expect something in the mail". Okay, I was excited because she recently sent me a Mac & Jill coffee mug and I LOVE IT!
It wasn't a Mac & Jill mug. Instead, it said, "oh, fizznuts!" I died laughing!! I'd take a picture, but I'm currently using this mug while I'm typing this. If you havn't read my stories--and trust me, I will NOT take offense if you haven't!--but since Kyte is an 11-year-old, she doesn't curse. I don't want her to curse, it's not in her to curse, but when things go awry she has to say something! My daughter used this term, I don't know if she made it up or read it somewhere, but I took it.
And it tickled Jody's quirky side, thus the coffee cup. :-) Yes, it really does make me smile.

3) If you've read this blog through any Christmas holiday, you'll know that I make candy--LOTS OF IT. It's a very lonely, time-consuming, back-breaking and laboreous process. Virtually all the candy is given away to my hubby's peers and employees. I never see their reactions. Oh, I hear about some of them, but maybe only 2%. It's one of those thankless jobs that I like to do because it makes me happy. Anyhoo, we were at a going away party for my husband's boss and I was approached by one of the wives. She told me that they FIGHT over the candy. "What??" Yes, my secret hidden smile popped out right about then as I got all warm and glowy. And then she wondered if I took special orders. Again . . . "What?" Turns out she's thinking about giving my candy to their daughter's swim coaches at the high school awards banquet. Too Kewl! I doubt if it will happen because it would probably be too pricey for them to afford. I did price it out since I am donating 5 one-pound boxes to Brenda Novak's For the Cure Auction to benefit Juvenile Diabetes in May. It would cost me close to $18 just in supplies to make the candy and that doesn't count my labor.
But again, it was nice to get that feeling of touching someone else's life even through my candy.

4) One of my writer friends, Karin Tabke, posts on a group blog, MURDER SHE WRITES. These ladies write romantic suspense. I've been reading the blog almost from the inception. Periodically, they will add new writers and one or two will have to drop out due to obligations, but they always have something fun to talk about. About a couple of weeks ago, they released an anthology called GUNS AND ROSES. An anthology is a book of short stories. Many times they will have to have a key ingredient to link the stories, this time each story had to have a gun and a rose. Period. I was reading away and then I start reading Karin's story. Imagine my surprise when I come across the name of the police dispatcher--MAGS. Yep, me again. I sent Karin a note, and while she didn't confirm or deny it, she did mention that she had to cut many of Mags scenes, but she would have more air time in another story. I hope Mags is a quirky character who has tons of idiosyncrisies!

So even though we don't realize it in our every day grind, we do touch other people's lives. You never know who you might touch or bring a smile to their face simply by sending them a {hug}, or the words you write or by showing them a little of your heart. Think about it and don't be stingy, we only have one life to go around, so make it a good one!

Later, peeps!

Why Count Words?

My buddy Jody had a mini-rant in the comments of my last post. (Aside: I HATE blogger!! It won't let me cut and paste--I had to retype the darn quote!! Aaarrrggghhh!) It bothered her that I tried to set a daily word count.

". . . you've GOT to just drop the whole "word count" beeswax. Word count means NOTHING. You can write 5000 word and they can all be CRAP. Or you can write one absolutely stellar passage."

". . . I set a goal to work out a particular section, chapter, passage, scene, whatever."

Of course, Jody thought I'd get pissed at this, but I just chuckled. Why? Because there is no one way that works for everyone, in every circumstance. If I had a short article to write, I might approach it in a different manner than I would a 100K novel. But I doubt it.

I've tried the tweak until it's perfect route, BUT I get so bogged down in the immediate that I tend to lose sight of the big picture. For something short, it doesn't matter. Because it's finished in a couple of pages, giving the writer plenty of time to tweak. In other words, writing a 500 word picture book is vastly different than a 25K word novella or a 100K novel. Yes, I have done them all. Each style has it's own challenges and requirements, but they all have to have pacing, plot, character arc, etc.

For my novels, I've recently discovered the 'puke it out' method, otherwise known as the Karin Tabke method. I used it for my middle grade story, MISSING: One Garden Gnome. I don't plot, which means I figure out the story AND characters as I write. I started this story in the mother's third person point of view, but finished it in the eleven-year-old Rhee's point of view. I had to go back and delete the first two chapters. There was no tweaking involved. Trust me, a kid does NOT think like an adult. Oh, the scenes were technically the same, as in the same location, but that's it.
--If I had tweaked this scene until it was perfect, I still would have had to delete my 'perfect words'. They wouldn't have fit my story.

BUT, an online friend sent this question and answer for Dean Koontz link to my goals group. Mr. Koontz is a tweak each page as you go type of writer, sometimes diddling with it for 20-40 PASSES! It works for his process.

So I count words. Jody perfects her scenes. When I still worked at a hospital , I wrote from 4:00-4:45 AM. The only way to find out what works for you is to try different things.

Once Upon a Time

And without further ado, my friend and fantastic writer, Karin Tabke!

Warning: Spew Alert!

In a land far far away, there was a noble Viking knight, Thorin Harraldsen, bastard son of King Harrald of Norway and a Byzantium gypsy princess. Thorin was one of eight fierce knights known far and wide as the Blood Swords. William, Duke of Normandy’s, elite guard, les morts.

Thorin stood head and shoulders above most men. His long, thick golden hair shrouded him like a cape, he was broad of chest and thick with muscle. In a Saracen prison when he saved a brother Blood Sword’s life he was rewarded with a scimitar to the face and lost his eye. He is ominous with his black leather eye-patch and sword emblazoned scar burned into his mighty chest. Despite his scars, he drew many a sigh from many a maid. Queens and princesses fainted in his presence so overcome with yarning were they. Aye, he was most handsome. He feared no man, no king, nor creature. Nothing on God’s green earth struck fear in his heart. Nothing…except--Lady Margaret of Tulsa.

For once she cast her eyes upon the noble warrior, his life became a living hell, for there was not a corner on earth he could hide, that she could not track him down and ravish him. Repeatedly. Aye, Lady Margaret had the nose of a she-wolf and the determination of a banshee. Not even Thorin’s brother Blood Swords could stave off the lustful lady.

And so, ‘tis this one infatuated maid who now holds Thorin captive as her sex-slave. Aye, the things she does to him, unimaginable to be sure. ‘Tis whispered she is insatiable. The Viking has not been seen since she snared him so many centuries ago. But ‘tis said, if ever you travel through the heartland of the Americas, and if you listen closely, you can hear Thorin’s cries for rescue and Lady Margaret’s sighs of satisfaction as she once again takes her captive Viking for another rollicking ride…

The End!

:-)

Margaret thank you for having me today! And thank you for taking care of Thorin all this time. But I have to tell you, you’re gonna have to let him go pretty soon. I’m working on his book, and he’ll need to be 100% available to MOI!

Cyber Writing Friends.

On Monday, my friend Karin Tabke promised to blog about her new release, Master of Craving, Book Three in the Blood Sword Legacy. If you love medieval knights like they've never been portrayed before, you need to check out Karin's historical backlist.

She writes about hot cops, too, but it's her hot knights that have my heart. Especially Thorin. *heart beats erratically* She promised me that book four will be his. I would love to have some of his Viking luv. Mmm-mmm.

I highly recommend starting with the first book and keep on reading. She takes the reader into a realistic world of the Crusades, and sweeps them away into a huge story filled with pain and love and especially a Happily Ever After. But if you you just aren't sure about Karin's stories, why don't you go here and you can read the freebie. Enjoy! I know I did.

I cyber met Karin when I joined my on line goals group GIAM in 2005. And met her in person in Atlanta at RWA's National Conference in 2006 (I think). I may have met her in Reno, but it's kinda hazy for me. She is as beautiful and gracious in person as she is online. Don't ever come whining to Karin. She'll pat you on the head and then you to get the F*CK back in the game. She drops F-bombs like no one else I know! . . . except maybe Jody. :-) And she has started giving a presentation titled, "It's Only Business", reminding us all that the bottom line will always be to make money for the publisher and don't take rejections personally.

Karin is an extremely supportive of the newbie writer as well as the vetern. Which earned her RWA's PRO Mentor of the Year in 2008. I wish I could have been there to cheer her on when she accepted it.

I hope you will enjoy Karin's blog on Monday. Please feel free to go out and buy her books. Jaded, one of her hot cop books, just won the Romantic Times Reviewer's Choce for Best Erotic Suspense for 2008. I read it and it's great!
