We’ve all had them. We either loved ‘em or hate ‘em. Some of us would have loved to avoid them at all costs. What am I talking about? The dreaded first date. You know the ones I mean. The guy that you really really want to go out with finally calls and asks you out, but when the day comes, you have nothing to wear, your hair decides to frizz (or go limp as an overcooked noodle), or out of the clear blue you develop adult on-set acne, or…well you get the picture.

If you’ve been following the Texas Two Step blog tour, you know my hero is Mitch Landry and my heroine is Olivia Montgomery. They had a wonderful three year love affair until fate stepped in then their worlds went crashing down. Texas Two Step opens six years after their traumatic split.

Their love affair has a wonderful backstory, one I know as well as I know my own dating history. One of the big “no-no’s” of writing books is frontloading with a backstory dump. I decided that readers might enjoy reading vignettes from Mitch and Olivia’s early days and have been posting episodes of Texas Two Step – The Prequel this past week. Today’s installment is The First Date-Part One. If this is your first day of stumbling onto my tour, there will be links to the earlier installments if you follow the link above.

So before you head over to read about Olivia’s date with Mitch, tell me about a memorable first date in your life.

I’ll go first. On my first date with my husband, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go out with him, but being a single gal on a fixed budget, any date meant a free meal. He took me to a very nice (now extinct) restaurant on Mud Island in Memphis. Apparently I misread the menu and ordered two huge entrées instead of an appetizer and entrée! And to make my totally uncool self look even worse, this very nice restaurant wrapped it’s lemon halves (to squeeze over your seafood) in a pretty little cheesecloth tied at the top with a lovely yellow silk ribbon. I had no idea what it was so I untied the ribbon and…plop, the lemon fell onto my plate with a loud clatter. Oops. Apparently I have other charming aspects besides my dining habits as he did call again.

So it’s your turn. Make me laugh, cry, or cringe with a first date story to remember.

  3. No problemo, my friend. Though I will warn you, my peeps are usually vera, vera, quiet. . . cause they're huntin' wabbits . . .

Time for a nuther cup 'o joe, I got wascally wabbits (er, Bugs Bunny for my International peeps) on the brain.

  4. Cynthia, great story about the lemon.I remember my first date with my husband. I was so nervous, I wanted to cancel, but I didn't have his number. He picked me up in his vehicle, which was a pickup that was sooo loud ,we couldn't hear each other except with the windows closed. Did I mention there was no a/c and it was summer? He took me to the golden arches and told me he had $6.00 for our dinner. Then he told me what he was having. I'm looking at the menu and adding in my head thinking he's not going to have enough money for me. I did have that twenty dollars in my purse in case I needed to escape, but I wasn't using that. I got a coffee. He did share his fries with me, though. As bad as this date seems, I did marry him. Makes me laugh when I look back now.
    Thanks for the blog tour.

  5. And after that first date, you still fell in love and got married...Congrats on finding the perfect guy, Cyndi.

One of my first dates in college took me to the beach where he said we'd have some Cold Duck. Being a naive Southern Baptist girl, I thought we were going to have sandwiches.

  6. Too funny, Cyndi! My first date was with a guy my parents thought was my age, but he was really several years older -- and once they found out, they refused to let me see him again. Our date was good, nothing special, just burgers and a movie, but that was that. And talk about a fight the next time he asked me out... I thought my mother was the meanest person on God's green earth. lol Now I know she was just looking out for me.

  7. Leigh - I am HOWLING at the sandwiches comment! So is hubby.

Joanne - I can't believe you went out with him again! Why did you? What did you see in that first date that prompted you to give him another chance?

Hi Tonya. Lemon story is true. That was almost 30 years ago and my husband still tells everyone that I ordered two entrees on my first date. At least that gave him some indication of how much I love to eat! HAHAHAHA

  8. Hi Melanie! When I was 18 or 19, I went out with an "older man" of 24. My parents HATED him. Truth to tell, I wasn't crazy about him either but he was "an older man", which made it cool to date him. Thought I'd never get rid of him after a couple of dates!

    Thanks for coming by.

  9. Love the story, Cyndi. My hubby moved into town the summer of our Junior year and immediately asked one of my friends out. She fell madly in love with him, but he wasn't interested. He kept asking me out, but of course, I said no. Then right before school started in August, she told me she liked o someone else. I saw it as a green light and told his best friend to tell him I would go out with him.
So called "friend" heard and told him the only reason I was going out with him was because he made first string on the football team. Hubby said, "Tell that pig I would never go out with her."

Forty-two years later, I am still his little piglet!!

  10. I love these stories! Your dinner flubs are too cute!

  11. Cyndi - loving these stories!

That's priceless that the double entrees gave your husband an idea of your appetite.

Liz - your husband had one heck of a best friend--NOT. LOL

On one of my first dates with a guy, we parked afterward in a quiet place--just talking, I swear.

And it was four o'clock in the morning.

And my dad drove by on his way to work. (gulp) He just sat there for a minute, engine running....

Needless to say, that was my first and last date with that guy!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Barbara! OMG! Your father discovered you "parking" at 4 a.m.??? And just talking. *cough* we all believe that!

Liz - My little piglet...don't think that will come back to haunt you! brawahahahaha

Sandi-thanks for coming by. Can't believe you don't have a good story to share :)

  13. Hi Cynthia!
First dates - Oh, man. I would have to say that the bad first dates outnumbered the good ones but - when I met my husband, we'd been talking on the phone for a while, and I already felt like I knew him. We agreed to meet someplace for dinner. I had my own car so if I didn't like him I could leave whenever I wanted.

By the end of a long dinner, we'd made plans to see each other again. I wasn't bowled over by him, but I definitely had a sense of - I'd go out with this guy again. A year later (almost to the day) we got married. :)

  14. I am always looking for new authors to read and your book sounds really good.

  15. Cynthia!

Of course, we were. Because I said:

    just talking--I swear.

If not, I'd have said we were:

    just talking--I swear. ;)

    See the difference? LOL

  16. Cyndi, first date stories are hilarious and these are no exceptions. My worst first date was also my last. The guy drove a black Trans Am, was cute, and came from money. About 1/4 way through the date I understood why he couldn't keep a girlfriend. He KNEW he drove a Trans Am, KNEW he was cute, and KNEW he came from money. At 1/2 through the date I thought if I heard the word ME one more time, my steak knife would find a home in something other my steak. By the time the date was over, I wondered if I'd be able to fit in his car with him and his ego. When we finally got to my house, he'd barely pulled up to the curb when I told him bye, jumped out of the car and ran into my house. I think he must have been stunned because he sat outside for a few minutes before he finally drove off. Not all good things come in fancy packaging.

  17. Hi Lynne. I wasn't "in immediate love" with my husband, which is probably why he found me so attractive. He had to work for it!

Thanks for coming by. I know you're busy with all your own blog tour. Good luck with your new HQ Special Edition book!

  20. Hi June. I dated a few money guys in college. One of them had TWO CARS AT COLLEGE!! One of the had a father who owned a car dealership so he was always driving a new car. And yes, I went out with a "very well to-do" guy. So I know what you mean about your date. I had a date with a doctor once and I bet you a million bucks he doesn't remember me. Why? He talked about himself the entire time. I doubt he knew my name at the end of the date.

    Thanks for coming by.

  21. Oh, man. You're asking a single 50-something who has dared to enter the realm of internet dating to tell you about "a" memorable first date?

There are enough stories there to fill a book of my own.

I even have a title: Match - dot - Comedy

  22. Ah, ladies. I am sooo boring.

One first was with a "friend", a ministerial student who sat with me in church.

We went to a drive-in movie to see PSYCHO, a scary movie. I wanted to watch the movie. He expected me to cringe in his arms so he could "comfort me". I finally told him I really wanted to see the movie and that he paid too much to use it as a parking space.

I was innocent and snarky before it had a name. I later told him that if he wanted to learn about sin so he could preach about, he would need a different partner. He stopped why?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Momma Mary! You? Snarky? Never! What was that boy thinking taking a good church going woman like you to a drive-in to "watch" a scary movie! I can't figure out why he never called again. Mystery!

Oh Jody. You MUST a couple of good stories. Spill! Inquiring minds want to know.

  24. On my first date with my future husband he forgot his wallet. We were poor college students. He wanted to take me to the nicest restaurant in our college town. Half way through the meal he realized he left his wallet in his dorm room. I paid for dinner. He never got over it. LOL

  26. Well my very first - first date was to a movie with a boy from school. My friends helped me pick out a cute summer dress. Well we were at the movie and one of the straps snapped. OMG I don't think I have ever been that red in my life. I was mortified.
Thank goodness I caught it before the whole front was falling down.

  27. Hi, Cynthia! I'm so thankful not to have to worry about first dates anymore ;) But it sure is fun to read about other people's journeys ;) Congrats on your debut, and can't wait to add it to my TBR!

  28. Hi Patti P! OMG on the dress strap! What did you do? I did wear a strapless dress ONCE. Bet you can guess what happened. Yep, slid down to my waist! Luckily I was walking alone in the hall and no one saw it...except maybe the hotel cameras. Yesh...I hadn't thought about that until now!

Hi Flchen1! I do hope you get Texas Two Step. Right now it's pretty cheap at $3.85! Hope you enjoy it. Let me know what you thought when you're done. Thanks for coming by. Don't forget to request the TTS freebies!

  30. I do have an interesting first date story with my hubby...It didn't go well. We made a plan, through a friend, to meet at a Happy Hour. He got a bit too drunk and I was more than happily planning never to see him again...until he offered dinner for our next date. Like you, I thought "nice meal" and asked him where. When he said a nice seafood restaurant, I said OK and the rest, as they say, is history. We've been married for 20+ years.

  31. Love the story Catherine! When you're single and trying to make it on a limited budget, a meal can influence a gal's thinking!
