We’ve all had them. We either loved ‘em or hate ‘em. Some of us would have loved to avoid them at all costs. What am I talking about? The dreaded first date. You know the ones I mean. The guy that you really really want to go out with finally calls and asks you out, but when the day comes, you have nothing to wear, your hair decides to frizz (or go limp as an overcooked noodle), or out of the clear blue you develop adult on-set acne, or…well you get the picture.
If you’ve been following the Texas Two Step blog tour, you know my hero is Mitch Landry and my heroine is Olivia Montgomery. They had a wonderful three year love affair until fate stepped in then their worlds went crashing down. Texas Two Step opens six years after their traumatic split.
Their love affair has a wonderful backstory, one I know as well as I know my own dating history. One of the big “no-no’s” of writing books is frontloading with a backstory dump. I decided that readers might enjoy reading vignettes from Mitch and Olivia’s early days and have been posting episodes of Texas Two Step – The Prequel this past week. Today’s installment is The First Date-Part One. If this is your first day of stumbling onto my tour, there will be links to the earlier installments if you follow the link above.
So before you head over to read about Olivia’s date with Mitch, tell me about a memorable first date in your life.
I’ll go first. On my first date with my husband, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go out with him, but being a single gal on a fixed budget, any date meant a free meal. He took me to a very nice (now extinct) restaurant on Mud Island in Memphis . Apparently I misread the menu and ordered two huge entrées instead of an appetizer and entrée! And to make my totally uncool self look even worse, this very nice restaurant wrapped it’s lemon halves (to squeeze over your seafood) in a pretty little cheesecloth tied at the top with a lovely yellow silk ribbon. I had no idea what it was so I untied the ribbon and…plop, the lemon fell onto my plate with a loud clatter. Oops. Apparently I have other charming aspects besides my dining habits as he did call again.
So it’s your turn. Make me laugh, cry, or cringe with a first date story to remember.
Today’s TTS Blog Tour PrizeMany guest bloggers can offer a copy of a backlist book to be given away as a potential prize for a blog commenter. As a debut author, I don’t have a backlist. But I do have some awesome author friends who have stepped forward and offered one of their books as a prize.
