Well, yesterday we took our one and only to Girl Scout camp. She's going to be gone for five days.
Wow.
It's going to be weird without her chattering all the time. The silence will be deafening. Ah . . . the peace.
*shh* Don't tell her!
This is the kid who periodically gets homesick when she spends the night at a friend's house, her cousin's house and even at grandma's house. She usually calls us (except when she's at grandma's house, because grandma's tough!) and gets even sadder until Daddy *cough* caves and picks her up.
I don't drive at night if I don't have to, which means I would NEVER cave.
Well, at GS camp there is no calling home. There is no parental communication. Oh, the parents can send a pre-written letter or email to your kid, but it isn't happening in 'real' time and the kid can't respond back. Once we leave, she's on her own.
And personally, I think she'll be so tired she won't have a chance to get homesick.
I'm excited for her, but at the same time I'm excited for the hubster and me . . . we will be AWOL for a few days. Dropping off the grid will be a nice change of pace.
I feel really, really sorry for all those kiddos--when we dropped ours off it was 110 degrees--and they have NO air conditioning, only fans in the cabins. This week it is supposed to be 100+ degrees every day, which means the nights won't be colder than 80-85 degrees, equaling miserable sleeping. I hope she enjoys her first long camp experience.
See ya later on the flipside, Peeps!
Margaret--
ReplyDeleteYou know you're gonna miss her. Glad you and DH can go off grid. Makes for better parents!!
I got homesick -- still do.
Have a ton of fun while kidlet is at camp.
I was the same as Rachel - used to get homesick staying overnight at my girl friend's house NEXT DOOR. Had to come home in the middle of the night. Then I got to go to horseback riding camp. I went for EIGHT WEEKS and was never homesick once. I didn't want to come back home.
ReplyDeleteOf course, when I went to college I was homesick in two days. Until I started the horseback riding program. Once again, magical cure!
Margie, I remember all the tricks we had for staying cool during horse shows in the summer....like soaking rags in ice cold water and draping them around our necks. I'm hopeful that the counselors at Rachel's camp will know similar tricks.
I get homesick NOW but not when I was a kiddo.
ReplyDeleteand hot at summer camp? Goes with the territory. Don't remember bitching about it back then. Now? it's bitch bitch bitch all day long.
Our yard is as brown as toast. We water but can't seem to get caught up. Burn ban started today in our area and not just fires. No using the BBQ grill! And it's too hot to heat up the kitchen to cook.
Sounds like dinner out for a while. Who's with me on this?
I used to get homesick when I spent the night at my aunt and uncle's house. Uncle Floyd would get so tired of my weepiness that he would load all of us into the car and take us to the store down the road, where we stocked up on penny candy.
ReplyDeleteNeedless to say, I never got over the sniffling with him. ;-)
She'll survive the heat and have a ball.
Meg--Thanks, we did think about her a lot . . . let's just say she got some killer gifts. :-)
ReplyDeleteJods--I hope she had so much fun that she didn't even miss us! the two counsilors(sp?) were pretty laid back about the whole thing. There names were Twinkle and Ta-Da! . . . yeah . . .
Cyndi--I think she's like every other kid out there--she won't think about the heat until she has some air conditioning again. I'm with you . . . I like my comfort!
Thanks, Marilyn! You really knew how to work your uncle!
