First 'Official' Day of Summer!

Today is the first official day of summer as Friday was the kiddo's last day of school and weekends don't count. So, of course, I wake up at four frickin' thirty in the morning, finally gave up on going back to sleep at around five-fifteen. True, I'm an early riser but six o'clock is my normal time. This was just too nuts.

Rachel has an eye appointment this morning, but so far we don't have anything else scheduled. I promised to take her to the zoo afterwards. We have a nice zoo, but it's a two hour jaunt, if that, not including drive time. I want to stop by our Air and Space Museum to check out their summer programs for kids since it's close to the zoo--one stop shopping my fave.

I did enroll her in two summer camps. She has a two week break before she starts the first one, which is a week long soccer camp at TU (Tulsa University) that features the University's soccer coaches and players teaching these kids. She did half-days last year and loved it. I'll let you know after they run her butt off during the all day camp this year whether or not she loves it.

Two weeks off and then zoo camp called Meet the Predators. Tulsa Zoo also changed their half-day camps to full day ones, which makes it easier on the parents, plus they are offering before and after camp care for the parents who need it. Last year, I took my computer and parked myself at one of the picnic tables with a handy dandy plug and wrote. It was nice overlooking the lake while I wrote about demons and evil critters.

I did look into another camp this year, it's at Phibrook Art Museum. They had a variety of topics, but the classes were half-day for two weeks and over $250--OUCH! And that was for members! The hassle and money factor might be more than the educational worth.

And during Rachel's free time when she's not at camp: dollar or free summer movies, the zoo or aquarium (both with season passes), swim lessons (we have a pool at home), 3rd grade curriculum exercises, summer reading program through the library, and I bought her a book and supplies on how to draw dragons :-). And, of course, inviting friends or her cousins over for an overnight or just a day in the pool.

I don't see us taking a big vacation this year, though we will do some weekend jaunts to Silver Dollar City and Branson. And Rach expressed an interest in fishing, so we might have to get out on the lake to hook some sunfish.

Some where in there I'll have to find time to edit my gnome story.

Write on!

  1. WOW! You keep your kiddo busy during the summer. Neither one of my kids are in camp this year. But they will spend time with their nana.

My son is just as happy staying at home and playing with the boys in the neighborhood, than doing anything else. My girl, would shop every day all day, if she could. hehe

  2. I hear this weekend we have two free fishing days in OK--so no license is needed. Mom and Dad can fish, too, without worry about getting a fine.
    Fun times.

  3. What I find interesting is how structured kids' time seems to be these days. Everywhere, all year 'round. Whatever happened to just hanging out, going outside and playing all day all summer long?

I know, it's a different world. You can't just let you kids out the door in the morning and not think or worry about where they are. My parents, and my friends' parents, never knew where we were, but never worried about us, either. We were somewhere in the neighborhood. There were no cell phones to call us on, but we were never too far away to hear our parents when they came out on the back porch and hollered for us at dinner time.

Boy, the world has changed. I really liked it back then. I don't like it much at all these days.

  4. I'd love for Rach to spend time with her grandmothers, but my mom is too old and tired (87), and Todd's mom will only watch her every now and then, provided Rach's cousin is there to keep both of them occupied.

Good to know, Susan! We've talked about hiring some dude that has the boat, reels, and knows of the fish locations to take care of it.

Yeah, Jody, life is much creepier than it used to be. Plus I live only five houses in from Mingo Road so I don't dare let Rachel go out front alone. And we have the large water hazard in the backyard. We've done the zoo camps and soccer camps before, she liked them both, but this year they are all day long--she's going to be one tired puppy at the end of the day.

  5. I'm exhausted from reading all your plans! I remember lazy summer days, reading books, sleeping late, riding my bike, one week of girl scout camp. That's it.

The world has changed...and sometimes I'm not sure it's always for the better

  6. I went to horseback riding camp for 8 weeks (yes, 8 weeks, that is NOT a typo) but it was my choice. More like, I begged and pleaded till mom gave in.

Other than that, the lazy summer day thing was totally my style. It still is. It's too bad that pesky work stuff gets in the way.

  7. Oh, we'll have some lazy days this summer, Cyndi, but I've found it's best to keep my options open. Oh, and I did the Girl Scout camp--HATED IT!
Unless the kiddo is occupied, she wants me to play with her, which makes it hard to do this writing Thang!

Wow, Jody! Eight weeks? That would have been a total blast!
