Horsin' Around

I woke up in the middle of the night trying to decide what to write about today. I drew a blank. Actually, this is a pretty normal occurrence for me. I think so much stuff is crammed in my noggin that I blow a fuse. Or it could be because I didn't want to figure out how I'm going to get my little gnome, Rory Leafhopper, out of the mouth of Mr. Bickles the witch's cat! But that's my middle grade novel and doesn't belong here.

Anyhoo, I thought about Facebook and my 'friends', and then I thought about one of my friends who refuses to cross over to the dark side. And she took it one more step and became my first follower on this blog! Wow, how cool is that?!

Jody and I go way back. Time, distance, and becoming horseless has taken the toll on our relationship. I thought I'd be better at emailing people, but I've failed in that respect. Jody wrote me a long note after I sent her the Facebook invite, and I started writing an answer. . . wait, that's a lie. I thought about writing her an answer, but got bogged down in other miscellaneous crap. Your note is still in my inbox, taunting me everytime I open my email. I WILL get to it, Jody! Though it will have to wait until after this Easter weekend.

So, instead of an email--this blog is for you, Jody!

We met when we stabled our horses at a local barn, KJM Stables--best place to kill some time! Jody is the perfect Hunter rider. She has long arms, long legs and a shortish torso. This translates into a beautiful picture on the back of our equine friends. She's a beautiful rider with a wickedly funny sense of humor. She also is a very talented artist, and draws the best cartoon horses EVER! Check out her store here.

She made a shirt for the 1993 Oklahoma Hunter Jumper Association that I wore yesterday over my workout clothes. Yes, I realize that it is currently 2009 and the shirt is 16 years old. But I LOVE it! Washed about a bazillion times, it still has the horsy sweat marks where I was used as a rubbing post!

It has the picture of a schooling ring on the back. And I really can't describe the pictures, but it depicts the chaos of schooling your horse before a horse show. If you can survive the schooling ring, then jumping eight fences with no one in your way is a piece of cake!

So if you love horses or know someone who loves horses hop on over to Jody's website, Misfit Designs. I know you'll find something!

I miss owning/riding a horse and would love to have another one. You know, I never did clean my tack as I kept hoping that I'll use it again soon. It's been five years now, I think it's time I clean my tack and properly store it.

Bummer.

  2. Thanks, Edie! I need to get my rear in gear and order a coffee mug/t-shirt--uh, like I need another mug/t-shirt!

If you know any horse-crazy people please forward her link! Thanks!

  3. Margaret, I never knew you were a horse person. Thanks for the peek into your past. Do you have any horses now? Can DD ride?

I also skipped over to Jodi's website and was impressed with the designs. I have never been around horses but I love movies and books about them. You should write one!

    Happy Easter, BTW.

  4. Clean the tack, you lazy....

Never mind. You should see my carpets. Those who live in glass houses and all that...

I can so see you on a horse. Nice tribute to your friend.

  5. Thanks, Liz. I'm horseless now, but I really want to get off my fat butt and start riding again--I'll have to borrow a horse to get into shape again. I don't relish the screaming muscles as my short little legs try to stretch around a horse's girth.
I started an RS, involving a horse, sent it into a contest and had judges complain about the horse scene--uh, the horse is the freakin' catalyst--but she wouldn't have known that in the first 30 pages.

  6. Yeah, yeah, I'll clean my tack soon, maybe someday I'll have an old riding buddy take pity on me. Naw, I don't see that happening.
I really, really miss the eau de horse. They all had their unique odor, sort of spicy smelling.

  7. Disclaimer: thought I'd posted this comment, but don't think it took...so my apologies if it shows up twice!

    Margie,
It was so much fun to read this blog today! Thanks for the kind words. I miss the days we all of us adults - you, me, Ellen, Charlie and Mary - used to take lessons and go to horse shows together! How Carol survived all of us in the same arena is beyond me.

I'm sure that you could make Abe, Buster and Princess (the names of Margaret's horses) the stars of many equine adventures. There's a huge young adult market for horse series/stories.

I've sent you a few photos from our horsey days via email....

  9. One of my sisters is a horsey person - ever since she was a little girl, and now she has her own horse. The rest of us didn't get the gene. I really like horses, and like being near them, but that's nothing compared to how my sister (also called Jody!) feels about them. Interesting, this whole horsey gene thing. Thanks for the blog, Margaret!

  10. Wow, sorry I'm so behind on commenting, but we went to the Nickelback concert last night then had to get up bright and early for the kiddo's soccer game, and then went to a Chucky Cheese birthday party!

Jody, I sure do miss those days. And thanks for the pics! Did Charlie take those? I have the infamous butt shot as he got of Princess and me jumping a fence at a Westwood show! I remember it vividly. I love writing about critters in my stories, most of them have an important role that isn't obvious until the climax. :-)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll get around to it, Karin! Shoot, I really need to check on the saddle, hubby spent big bucks on that Stubben!

Hi, Rachel! Thanks for stopping by! I hope you hooked your sis up with Jody's website! Trust me, horse people will so get it! I think the horse thing is inate, either you're born with it or you aren't. It may take years to snag you, and you may walk away, but a true horseman will always go back!

  11. There's also no such thing as a 12-step program to deal with horse addiction, because none of us can get past step one (admit you have a problem.)

Problem? What problem? I see no problem.

  16. Thanks for stopping by, Mary! We had fun making them, though we couldn't find the white circus peanuts and I had to free hand white chocolate bunny feet.
