Demon Connection: no new words
Started to flesh out GMC charts for hero, heroine, and two villains: 255 words
Today started off pretty well, with the exception of my hero's lack of motivation. I have a goal for him (one that will change as the story goes along). And I have varying forms of conflict. Shoot, I even have the 'black moment' or the 'all is lost' part of the story, but I knew his motivation for involving the heroine was weak, super-duper weak. I need something to up the ante in his corner of the poker table.
And I didn't want it to be too easy. Easy = boring. The easy way is the lazy way for the writer, thus all that sitting and staring into space is actually accomplishing something!
So instead of writing new words, I worked on the GMC of my main characters.
G--goal
M--motivation
C--conflict
To have a nice, well-rounded story, a writer must give your characters a reason for being on the page, for making the choices they are forced to make. My GMC chart still needs some work, but I'm reviewing Deb Dixon's GMC book and I'm getting closer to resolving this issue.
I've taken a few classes on how to up my word count, but I've found that focusing only on the numbers leaves some very lean work. (As in--it sucks.) So I try for a WC I can manage and while getting the GMC in, too.
ReplyDeleteI've been listening to Julia Cameron and some other woman on The Writing Life. JC says that she might not get a word count in, but she's fleshing (my word)out her story.
ReplyDeleteThought this was great as I do think out my story when I'm stuck.
Good luck, Margaret!!!
I found that I can crank out the words provided, a) I had most of the story road figured out, b) peace and quiet (in other words, the kidlet needs to be gone), C) I have someone to play with in the chat room so I can try to 'beat' their word count.
ReplyDeleteOnly one out of the three has been the case this week. I had figured out some of my GMC, but needed to seriously find out WHY my hero offers to help the heroine.
And I didn't have a good answer until I woke up this morning. I still haven't written, but I think I'm still working out the logistics of his actions.
